Understanding the Language of Film
A lease opens with a peaceful shot of sunrise oer green hills. The photographic camera pans over fields, and we hear gentle music and birds chirping. But the undermentioned shot shows a bare tree with rocks around it, and consequently cuts to the darkening sky with clouds blowing in. The music begins to rise in urgency, and of a sudden it is raining; we see a long shot of a man struggling uphill with a basise. He passes a dead sheep, and comes to a cottage. When he cant open the gate, he climbs over and falls into mud. The music begins to pound as dogs come at him baring their teeth. We see his wet face in a close-up as he frantically bangs on the door. It opens, just as a voice behind him says, Who the hell are you? (Language of Film, 1)When psyche would view this in the theatre, they would instantly start piecing the shots together and withdraw questions in their head. Who is this man and why is he running? What is he running from? Is this a flashback? Many questions race through the viewers mind while they continue to absorb the images and sounds that are presented to them.
Essentially, film is a run-in in which the director and crew soften to communicate a story using pictures and sounds. Just handle speaking English, tapping out Morse code, or waving semaphores, thither is an entire set of words, phrases, punctuation, rules and customary practices in a language that must be learned. The more thoroughly one know this, the more effectively they can communicate. With this in mind, one can say that film is a language of its own, having certain rules, common practices and guidelines in order to make sense. Every little shot, edit, hole and sound has a meaning to it and when combined in a specific order, create meaning.
