The sketch book The Red Tree, by Shaun Tan reveals how illustrations can be utilize as powerful tools to communicate feelings, concepts, emotions and peoples personal experiences in a non verbal form.
We dont normally assistant the colour red with a tree, rather we instinctively ph wizard of noctilucent luscious green foliage breathing with life. A red tree in a forest would fend for out, it would be different, it would simply not belong.
The colour red is to a greater extent symbolic of warmth and passion, feelings that the girl is devoid of. The girl is insensate and alone, she has incapacitated her passion for life and is trapped in her depressive state. notwithstanding it is the warmth and brightness symbolized by the red tree that the schoolgirlish girl needs and eventually comes home to.
On the pages that The Red tree is presented there is a difference in the parentage of colour. The authour wants the readers attention to be first gaunt to the red tree, so the red tree is presented in bright colours where as the surrounding backing is presented in dreary and dull colours.
Body language is another proficiency used by the authour, the girl is continuously presented with her head down this technique is used to range sadness and disappointment it gives the reader the horse sense that the girl does not belong at this point of time.
A visual metaphor is also used, the red tree has lost its leaves, they are scattered throughout the pages of the picture book, and this is used to represent a lack or shortening of time.
Symbolism is one of the main techniques used as the picture book does not consist of any words.
In this text powerful images, with few words, are used to express the young girls state of being. Her board is a soft pastel colour which symbolizes a fully and warm environment.
