African Traditional Religions went for many years under the veil of western writers who described for the African people what to believe and what non to believe. One would wonder what the real agenda was for the missionaries who came to Africa; whether it was for colonization or a mission to evangelize. The later sounds more real than the causality when taking into perspective how they demonized the indigenous theology calling it barbaric, uncivilized, and primordial then promoted a European culture and devotion at the expense of the indigenous people. According to Benezet Bujo, Europeans who came to Africa at the beginning of the compound era did not do so with the arouse of aid or civilizing the black people but for reasons of self interest (Bujo 39). It is thitherfore, the purpose of this paper to assess the attitude of western writers who embarrass missionaries, anthropologist and traders towards African Traditional Religion.
