The author uses connotative diction to set an eerie measure to this mysterious novel. It begins with a passenger switching from one motorcoach to an opposite in the middle of the night. He had traveled with other men on the first carriage exactly straightway it is only him, the driver, and the shaken up horses pulling the carriage. He is locomotion to Bukovina, a castle where he will meet his suppose and help him buy land (sparknotes: Dracula). As the carriage begins to depart, the other men stand by and watch the passenger leave, sequence they all cross themselves. As the story continues, the suspense begins to institute up. Surprisingly, the driver remains calm. Finally, they find themselves face to face with fell wolves. The diction of this excerpt gives the reader a clear spirit of the scene and forebodes doom. Dracula creates a tone of terror, with building suspense, symbols of death, and fear.
Stoker uses connotative diction to create a tone of terror. As the passenger moves from one calache, or carriage, to another, the other traveling men, and scour the driver, cross themselves.

It starts with a calm ride, but soon evolves into a fearful adventure. As the paasenger is driven down the road, wolves begin to howl, the wind grows colers, and it seems as if they ar trapped on the narrow road. Reassuring himself the howling is scarcely coming from dogs, the passenger tries to persuade himself that his fear is nothing but the superstitions of midnight. Little does he know that as the ride progresses, so does the fear and sense of death.
