The Massachusetts contribute of Technology recently released a survey, which asked which of five inventions Americans could not live without. The top on that list was the toothbrush. Personally, my woof was my cell phone. But, then when I sat down and really thought it out, the first thing I do in the morning is brush my teeth. The other inventions that made the list was the automobile, the micro-cook and of course the cell phone.
The first record of the toothbrush in history was back in 3000 BC, according to Wikipedia. The concept of the split toothbrush came later on in the 5th nose candy in 1498. The Chinese made this out of boars hair or horse hair for the bristles, and cattle bring up or bamboo for the handle. This kind of toothbrush spread to Europe by travellers, but didnt catch on too speedily because the bristles were too coarse for people.
It wasnt until 1780 when a man named William Addis, an Englishman, caught on to the idea and mass produced the toothbrush. The toothbrush was too expensive, so it was rough-cut for families to share a single toothbrush. The concept of using boar hair or horse hair change slightly 1938 when they were replaced by more synthetic fibers, such as nylon.
Weve start a long ways since the very first toothbrush. Overall, the Chinese made a very beneficial and important appliance for our everyday lives. Without the toothbrush, we would have increased amounts of illnesses caused by oral infections and diseases. So my theory stands!
