It is fall of 1986 and I am a third grader at Monroe Elementary prepare in South Bend, Indiana.
Lining up outside in the lead school was what all the third graders would do every morning. I can
remember some mornings smelling like burned leaves and vigorous cold air, but for the most part, I
just cherished the doors to open to the school, so I could get warm. My Elementary school day was an
acoustical stone slate and brick building, perfect for auditory sense your utter echo in the hallways. The
school smelled of dank brick and slate storey every time I entered the building, in other wrangling
it was old. Mrs. Fishburne has been my instructor for the past three months and I am pedigree to
feel comfortable with how she teaches the clique. During the last week of October, Mrs. Fishburne
was absent from year for a few days. I ended up hearing from a sixth grader that she had taken
her own life. I couldnt believe what I was heard, it was shocking.

information, I couldnt help to think about who would be the new teacher for my home room
class. Ms. DeCrane, the fourth grade math teacher, became the deputise teacher until the school
could find a long-lasting replacement. After a week of Ms. DeCrane teaching the class, she brings
in a visitor, a dark haired, thick mustached man who eventually introduced himself to the class as
Mr. Slattery. He told the class that he was passing game to be the substitute teacher for the rest of the
year. After hearing what he told us, the class had a look of amazement because the majority of
teachers were female. This is going to be a great change I purview to myself while wandering if
he was going to be our permanent teacher or not. The next day turned into weeks, than months,
